It was a Gator pool party at the Central Coast Section water polo championship in more ways than one.
Sacred Heart Prep made it a clean sweep with two CCS Open Division titles. The No. 1-seed SHP girls (24-3) started off championship Saturday at Hollister High School with a 9-6 win over No. 3 Soquel (21-6). Then in the nightcap, the No. 2 SHP boys (22-7) rallied for a 10-7 win over No. 1 Bellarmine (23-5).
It is the second time in school history SHP has captured the boys’ and girls’ CCS Open Division championships in the same year. The first time was in 2019. The two esteemed varsity programs have also achieved the feat seven times in CCS Division II, capturing dual titles from 2007-09 and against from 2011-16.
For the boys, the title is their sixth straight in the Open Division, their 12th straight overall dating back to 2011, and their 16th all-time. The girls have won two Open Division titles and 12 overall.
The SHP boys reached the championship round with wins over No. 7 Menlo 12-4 in the tournament quarterfinals followed by a 14-10 win over No. 3 Los Gatos in the semifinals. The SHP girls downed No. 8 Palo Alto 16-2 in the quarterfinals and No. 4 St. Francis 8-7 in the semis.
Both teams now advance to the CIF Northern California Regional Water Polo Championships opening Tuesday.
The SHP girls earned the No. 3 seed in the eight-team Division I tournament, and will host No. 6 Carondelet, Tuesday at 5 p.m.
The SHP boys earned the No. 1 seed in Division I, and will host No. 8 Davis, Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
