The Mills Vikings (10-3 PAL Ocean, 16-15 overall) have separated themselves in the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division volleyball standings, locking up sole possession of second place in the standings with a 18-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-13 home win Thursday over El Camino (9-4, 10-9).
Junior outside hitter Reanna Ng turned in a busy double-double performance of 11 kills and 30 digs, to go with five service aces. Junior middle Abigail Purvey led Mills with 12 kills while adding four blocks, junior middle Miila Hassan recorded a match-high five blocks, senior setter Noelle Young recorded 21 assists and sophomore setter Kara da Luz had 18 assists.
Entering the week, Mills was in a three-way tie for second place with San Mateo and El Camino. But Capuchino’s win over San Mateo on Tuesday helping clear the field, the Lady Vikings took care of business Thursday to put a one-game distance between other two teams in the standings. Cap secured the PAL Ocean championship with Tuesday’s win.
With one game remaining in regular-season play, San Mateo and El Camino can still catch Mills in the standings — a likely scenario, as the Vikings close the season facing league-champ Cap. But the Vikings hold the tiebreaker hammer over both teams after splitting the two-match season series with each, but taking more sets in head-to-head play with San Mateo (Mills won 4 of 7 sets) and El Camino (Mills won 5 of 9 sets).
The tiebreaker format is significant as only the champion in the “B” league Ocean Division receives an auto bid to the Central Coast Section playoffs. This leaves Mills the rights to the PAL Ocean’s first at-large postseason bid.
