The Aragon volleyball team is never to be taken lightly.
A Central Coast Section playoff semifinalist in each of the past two seasons, Aragon is a proven contender. And the outlook of Dons head coach Kelsey Stiles is equally as optimistic this season.
Menlo School has long been among the CCS elite though. A CCS Open Division qualifier last year, and a CIF Division IV state champion in 2016, Menlo entered this season dominating the annual non-conference showdown with Aragon, with the Knights having topped the Dons in each of the past six years.
The Lady Dons opened the 2018 season in style, though, snapping the six-match losing streak by taking down Menlo in four sets 24-26, 25-17, 25-19, 25-15.
Aragon setter Della Trimble navigated a two-pronged attack of junior Lydia Manu and sophomore Amanda Patea. The Dons’ outside hitter complement combined for 22 kills — Manu shared the match-high of 12 with Menlo senior Grace King, and Patea totaled 10 — while Trimble totaled 34 assists.
Aragon sophomore middle Ella Sears raised the roof with five blocks, while Trimble scored a match-high four aces.
Menlo was without senior setter Selina Xu, a Stanford commit who suffered an injury in the offseason while playing for the Women’s Junior National Team.
Menlo senior Sianna Houghton totaled a match-high 20 digs. Aragon defensive specialist Ally Thaw had a team-high 19 digs.
