Jaden Green, Serra football. The senior posted quite the highlight reel in Serra’s 54-16 win Saturday over Bellarmine, not only scoring three touchdowns, but recording one in each phase of the game. Green opened the day by nearly scoring on a punt return, taking a long runback to the Bellarmine 1-yard line; he turned the next play into a rushing touchdown, scoring on a 1-yard sweep. Green’s next score was on defense, as senior safety Joesph Bey forced a fumble and Green scooped it up for a 20-yard jaunt to the end zone. Then, for his final score, Green did break that punt return, sprinting 67 yards to the house in the second half.
Tyler Hogan, Sacred Heart Prep boys’ water polo. Hogan helped lead the Gators to a fourth-place finish in the North-South Tournament over the weekend. Hogan finished with 10 goals and 12 assists as the Gators went 2-2 against some of the toughest competition in California. In the third-place game, a 13-12 loss to Harvard-Westlake, Hogan had three goals and seven assists.
Italia Ghilarducci, El Camino volleyball. The Lady Colts galloped into a first-place tie in the PAL Ocean Division last week with a dramatic five-set win at Woodside. Ghilarducci led the way, scoring a team-high 12 kills.
Mario Garcia, Sequoia football. The Ravens were looking for some big performances in hopes of snapping a five-game losing streak. They certainly got one from Garcia. The senior linebacker went off in Sequoia’s 28-14 win over Terra Nova, racking up 14 tackles, including 10 solo takedowns.
Alessandra Nelson and Lauren Greene, Carlmont flag football. The senior receiver and sophomore quarterback had a big hand in leading the Scots to a 32-0 win over Sequoia. Nelson hauled in five catches for 124 yards, including three, beautiful touchdown grabs of 21, 58 and 26 yards. Greene provided two of those scoring passes as she threw three touchdowns and accumulated 171 yards of total offense — 119 yards on 6-of-8 passing and 58 yards rushing.
Ivan Nisa, Aragon football. The Dons have outscored teams 217-108 this season, and kept the trend going Friday with a 36-20 victory, their fifth straight win. Nisa was the catalyst as the senior running back totaled 22 carries for 183 yards and three touchdowns.

Josiah Yeager, Hillsdale boys’ water polo. The senior set a pair of school records last week — most goals in a game and the all-time goal-scoring mark. In 22-13 win over Terra Nova, Yeager poured in a career-high 17 goals, which left him tied for the all-time goals mark. Two days later, Yeager set the record, scoring six times in a 9-7 win over Aragon. Yeager now has 355 goals, breaking the record of 349 set by 2005 graduate Renato Hodzic.
Tatum Olesen, Menlo Atherton girls’ cross country. The senior is on the cusp of greatness after winning the PAL #2 girls’ varsity race last week at Crystal Springs Cross Country Course with a time of 18 minutes, 9 seconds. Olesen is nearing the line of demarkation at Crystal Springs, with the 18-minute mark serving as the cutoff for the High School Girls — Best Marks standings, one that currently lists 264 girls who have run the 2.95-mile course in under 18 minutes since 1971. The only other Menlo-Atherton girl ever to do so was Laurie Andeen, who accomplished the feat twice, first in 1985 in 17:48 and again in 1986 in 17:49.
Mason Furtado, Woodside football. The senior middle linebacker not only had a team-high eight tackles, he also starred on offense in the Wildcats’ 35-15 win over Fremont-Sunnyvale in a key PAL El Camino Division showdown. Sneaking in at quarterback in the first half, he rushed for a 28-yard touchdown. After starting quarterback Kyle Cortes went down with an ankle injury, Furtado guided the Wildcats to a score. Late in the fourth quarter, he flipped a short pass — nearly a handoff — to Daniel Torres, who went 14 yards for the final points.
Morgan Toomey, Burlingame volleyball. Burlingame extended its current winning streak to 11 straight matches with a monster week, including PAL Bay Division wins over Carlmont and Half Moon Bay, and five straight wins Saturday to capture the championship at the Spikefest II tournament hosted by Milpitas High School. Toomey opened the week with her second career double-double, totaling 18 kills and 14 digs in a four-set win at Carlmont. She followed that with a team-high 12 kills in a sweep at Half Moon Bay. Her biggest performance, though, came Saturday, as the Panthers, due to SATs, were missing four players through three matches of pool play due. Toomey held down the fort, as the senior middle blocker played six rotations through the three wins before Burlingame got its full lineup back for wins over Sacred Heart Cathedral in the tourney semifinals and Palo Alto in the finals.
Reece Roach, Mills flag football. Roach has turned into one of the best defensive rushers in flag football. She finished with nine “tackles” in the Vikings’ 6-0 win over Woodside. Six of her flag pulls went for a loss, including three sacks.
Isabelle Marco, Sacred Heart Prep volleyball. The Gators maintained a hold on first place in the WBAL Foothill Division with a 25-15, 25-20, 25-19 sweep of Mercy-Burlingame, and Marco was at the forefront. The senior is a hybrid setter-attacker in SHP’s sophisticated 6-2 offense, and showed off her versatility in the win, falling one dig shy of a triple-double with 17 kills, 23 assists and nine digs.
Comparing private school athletes and public school athletes is too simple minded. There should be a column for the "private school" and "public school" athlete of the week. Serra recruits and pays for all the best players in Football, baseball and basketball, then they play a bunch of chumps and run up the stats and scores. Then when the playoffs begin, Serra gets put in their place by another powerhouse private school.
Serra plays in an exclusively private school league and has won three straight Central Coast Section postseason championships, and five of the last six, with all these CCS championship-game victories against private schools. Their game mentioned in this week's Honor Roll was against a private school. So, the basis of comparison represented in this article is Serra's performance against a private school. Our policy in the Daily Journal sports department is not to make cuts to the Honor Roll, so we're not omitting anyone by including others; if a player deserves a mention, they get it. The basis of comparison in this case, while not intentionally on our part, is exactly what you're saying it should be. It isn't formatted that way, and we're not going to take you up on the recommendation of "public" and "private" columns. But thanks for reaching out and commenting. Have a nice day.
You obviously don't follow the WCAL (West Catholic Athletic League) that Serra belongs to. Year in, year out, the league is regarded as one of the most competitive in the state. Be it football, basketball etc., many of the Top 25 teams in bay area, are WCAL schools...to call their (Serra) competition "chumps" just illustrates your ignorance.
