Anna Salter, Crystal girls’ track and field. The reigning Daily Journal Girls’ Cross Country Athlete of the Year, Salter dominated the field in winning the 1,600 at the Dublin Distance Fiesta. Her time of 4:50.12 was the only sub-5 minute run of the day as she won by nearly nine seconds to post the fastest time in CCS this season.
Jalen Mingao, Summit Shasta baseball. Mingao didn’t get an Honor Roll mention when he hit for the cycle March 10 against KIPP Collegiate. So, he did it again. The Black Bears rolled to a 21-5 victory last Friday to sweep the season series from KIPP Collegiate, fueled by Mingao. The sophomore went 4 for 4 with a single, a double, a triple and a home run, to record his second cycle in as many games against the the San Jose team.
Brooke Arce, Burlingame softball. The sophomore transfer from Riordan was thrust into the Burlingame-San Mateo rivalry, and showed out with a brilliant performance both sides of the ball. Arce not only earned the win in the circle in the Panthers’ 14-4 win over their archrival, she turned in a perfect day at the plate. Hitting .526 on the season, Arce went 4 for 4 with a double, a home run and five RBIs as Burlingame snapped a five-game losing streak in head-to-head play with San Mateo.
Wilson Morales, San Mateo baseball. The sophomore outfielder/pitcher helped lead the Bearcats to a pair of non-league wins last week, combining for five hits and five RBIs. In a 6-1 win over Mt. Eden-Hayward, Morales went 2 for 3 with three RBIs. He also pitched two innings of one-hit ball. In a 6-0 win over Washington-SF, Morales went 3 for 4 with two more runs driven in.
Ryan Weiss, Carlmont baseball. The senior infielder had solid showings in a pair of weekend wins for the Scots. Weiss as 1 for 3 with a RBI and three runs scored in an 11-1 win over Live Oak Friday. He came back the next day to go 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
Riley Lim, Serra baseball. It was quite a week for a pair of University of the Pacific commits in the two-game WCAL series between Serra and Sacred Heart Cathedral. In the second game of the series, SHC right-hander Jacob Vines fired six shutout innings in the Fightin’ Irish’ 2-0 win. Vines’ future teammate at U of P opened the series with a gem of his own, as Lim went the distance last Tuesday in the Padres’ 5-1 victory. Serra’s senior ace allowed one run on five hits and a walk while notching a career-high eight strikeouts to improve his record to 3-0.

Benjamin Chock, Menlo boys’ lacrosse. The Knights outlasted St. Francis 7-6 in overtime to win their sixth straight to start the year. Four different Menlo players scored, led by a hat trick from senior Tyler Hinkie. But it was senior goalkeeper Benjamin Chock who led the way, allowing just six goals while totaling a season-high 22 saves.
Henry Hauser and Tres Onyejekwe, Menlo boys’ track and field. Hauser set the school record in the 800-meter race in 1.52.33 at the Dublin Distance Fiesta, breaking the previous best set in 2023. Onyejekwe, a sophomore, took silver in the 110 hurdles and bronze in the 300 hurdles, setting a school record in 38,79, beating the previous-best of 42.51 set in 2012.
Ben Warner, Menlo-Atherton boys’ volleyball. The senior outside hitter had two big matches, helping the Bears rally from deficits for wins. M-A dropped the first set to Nueva School, but Warner’s 26 kills and nine digs helped the Bears to a 22-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-8 win. Warner and the Bears had to dig even deeper Friday. Warner had 20 kills and nine more digs as the Bears rallied from two sets down to beat Hillsdale — 20-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-10, 15-13.
Hugo Guzman, Hillsdale baseball. The senior pitcher/shortstop helped the Knights to a PAL Bay Division series split with Menlo School. Guzman went the distance on the mound, pitching six innings, scattering six hits while striking out six and giving up three earned runs in a 14-4, mercy-rule win. He also helped himself out at the plate, going 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Elise Koo, Menlo-Atherton softball. The senior pitcher helped the Bears to a three-win week. She opened the week by allowing just one hit in three innings of work in an 18-1 win over American-Fremont. She came back with five innings of three-hit ball and an earned run in a 12-2 win over El Camino. She got the day off in Friday’s 16-4 win over Half Moon Bay.
Alexis Ivankov, Mills girls’ track and field. The Lady Vikings claimed the team championship at the Firebird Relays in Fremont, with Ivankov leading the way. The senior jumper earned two individual championships, ruling the triple jump with a distance of 35-0 even, shy of her personal record of 36-8 1/2, which she recorded earlier in the week in a PAL tri-meet at Menlo-Atherton. She also won the long jump with a 16-8, and placed third in the 100-yard dash with a 12.88, finishing back of teammate Kaylee Huyhn, who took second in 12.84.
