Hawaii state champion Honolulu will represent the West Region in the Little League World Series after punching its ticket to South Williamsport with a 4-1 win Thursday evening over Southern California champion Golden Hill in San Bernardino.
Honolulu advanced through the winners’ bracket at the Little League West Region Complex, opening the tourney with a 1-0 win Saturday, Aug. 2, over Golden Hill, followed by a 4-3 extra-inning win Monday, Aug. 2, over Northern California champion Alpine-West Menlo.
Starting pitcher Bronson Fermahim worked into the sixth inning, allowing one unearned run on four hits through 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander walked one batter and struck out 11. Mason Mitani entered with two outs in the sixth and made the final out himself on a brokenbat liner back to the mound.
Honolulu totaled just four hits against Golden Hill pitchers Jacob Woo and Lincoln Ploog, but rallied early for two runs in the first and one in the second. Mitani capped the scoring with a solo home run in the fifth. Golden Hill scored its only run in the sixth.
The Little League World Series opens Aug. 13 and spans through the Aug. 24 championship game featuring the U.S. champion vs. the international champion.
