The Aragon football started the 2004 season with a 41-14 loss to Los Gatos.
Two months later, Los Gatos ended Aragon's season with a 21-7 win in the semifinals of the Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs Friday night in San Jose.
The game boiled down to missed opportunities by Aragon (10-2) and big plays made by Los Gatos (10-1-1). The Dons failed to come away with any points on their first two drives of the game, twice getting inside the Wildcats 10-yard line.
"Those first half drives, I'm going to lose a lot of sleep over those," said Aragon coach Steve Sell.
Those missed chances, along with three, big scoring plays by Los Gatos was the difference. Los Gatos quarterback Eric Rollin had scoring tosses of 71, 36 and 29 yards. Vincent Bellotti had a big night, catching three passes for 111 yards and two scores - including a 71-yarder to put Los Gatos up 7-0 and a 36-yarder that put Los Gatos ahead to stay 14-7.
"They have a very good passing game," Sell said of the Wildcats. "Their offensive line stopped our blitzes. That may have been the key (to the game)."
The Dons' chances at tying the game came down to a fourth-down decision late in the game. Facing fourth-and-one from Dons' 34, Sell elected to punt, trailing 14-7.
"I wrestled with [the decision]," Sell said. "We had just went for it on fourth-and-two(late in the third quarter and came up short). We played the percentages."
Aragon made a few stops defensively, but whenever Los Gatos needed to convert, it did. The Wildcats started from their own 37 and drove down to the Aragon 29 with just over a minute to play. Rollin hit Brienzo for a 29-yard score to put the game away.
Aragon's first possession of the game started on its own 27 after stopping Los Gatos on fourth down on the first drive of the contest. The Dons methodically drove down the field, using the slashing running of Dominic Williams and the bull rushes from Matangi Tonga. Twice the Dons converted on fourth down as they faced first down at the 11.
But an incomplete pass, a blocking below the waist penalty, a sack and a false start pushed Aragon back to 42 where the Dons were forced to punt.
The Dons defense did their job on the Wildcats next possession, forcing a punt. The Aragon offense took over at its own 22 and again mounted a drive. A 27-yard pass from Noel Alexandre to Sitani Tau moved the ball to midfield as the Dons drove down to the Los Gatos 4. On fourth-and-goal, Alexandre dropped back to pass, was flushed out of the pocket and he scrambled to his right. Williams broke open in the back of the end zone but couldn't haul in the pass, giving the ball back to Los Gatos.
It appeared the half would end without a score when Los Gatos took over at its own 29 with less than a minute to play. On the first play of the drive, Rollin dropped back and hit Bellotti, who caught it in stride and outran the Aragon defense for a 71 touchdown and a 7-0 Wildcats lead with 36 left in the half.
Aragon took a second-half kickoff and promptly tied the game at 7. Starting from the 33, Aragon faced a third-and-five when Alexandre hooked up with Eddie Williams for a 54-yard play to the Wildcats' 8. Two plays later, Dominic Williams went into the end zone to tie the game but the Dons could not sustain any offense for the rest of the game.
"They certainly out-played us in the second half," Sell said. "We had a heck of time protecting our passer."
Los Gatos outgained Aragon 376-264. But take away the three touchdown passes — which totaled 136 yards — and the teams were basically even.

But those Los Gatos passes were difference between winning and losing.
"They're one of the top CCS teams for a reason," Sell said.
