For the Capuchino girls' soccer team, this was as routine as things could get. So routine, in fact, that no one felt the need to celebrate as the team racked up goal after goal. Against an undermanned Jefferson squad, the Mustangs' cruised to a 9-0 Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division win at Skyline College on Tuesday.
After his postgame speech, 11th-year Capuchino coach Marty Jenkins asked each member of his team who had scored a goal to stay so he could record the tallies. Seven players stepped forward.
"It's nice when that happens," Jenkins said. "In games like this, you do the same thing as you would any other game. We worked on our ball movement, substituted freely and built our depth."
The Mustangs (10-2-1 overall, 7-0-1 in league) maintained sole possession of first place, and did so in dominating fashion. They produced 29 - count 'em 29 - shots on goal, and also hit the crossbar five times. They led 3-0 at halftime, 6-0 after 45 minutes, 7-0 after 50 minutes, and, well, you get the picture. Wearing its new yellow mustard jerseys for the first time, Capuchino displayed precision, speed, intensity and toughness.
"Sometimes a new look gives you a new attitude," Jenkins said. "You want to spark your team in different ways, and a change here or there can motivate the players. This team has a lot of drive, they're technically sound and they execute well. They're also one of the fastest teams I've had here."

Caitlin Peluffo and Shelly Mathies scored two goals each, while Ryan Paulus, Melissa Lopez, Lindsay Gotthardt, Kim Blanchard and Sheila Damato scored one goal apiece. Jenn Tuite recorded two assists, and Gotthardt, Mathies, Peluffo and Kelly Young added one assist each. Cap goalkeepers Melissa Collins and Noelle Mathies made one save each. Mathies' preserved the shutout with a sliding save midway through the second half. Jefferson was limited to two shots on goal.
Lopez made it 3-0 in the 20th minute after knocking in a shot just in front of the Jefferson goal after Damato delivered the initial shot in traffic. Peluffo scored the team's last two goals, the latter off a perfect crossing pass from Tuite. Freshman Taylor Hill played a huge part in the Mustangs' seventh goal. Stationed near the left sideline, Hill's hustle and determination allowed her to keep possession after battling two Jefferson defenders for the ball. Hill then delivered a perfect pass to Shelly Mathies, who one-timed the shot in the 50th minute. Jenkins said Hill has the size and skills to become a force in the next couple of years.
Peluffo, Gotthardt and Lopez were particularly effective charging toward the net, combining for 11 shots on goal. The Mustangs were relentless in their attack, peppering the Jefferson goal early and often. Capuchino felt fully at home on Skyline's sparkling new FieldTurf soccer-only facility.
"This is a great place to play," Jenkins said. "With the rain we've had, our field is in bad shape and to be able to come here and play on a perfect surface can only help you in your performance."
