The 33-year-old San Mateo man who died Sunday morning after crashing his car off Highway 101 in Millbrae has been identified as Julio Rene Pelaez.
Palaez died at the scene of the crash after running off the highway just north of Millbrae Avenue at 10:16 a.m. Palaez, who was driving south from his place of employment, tried to change lanes when he lost control of the 1998 Chrysler Sebring, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Palaez swerved and ran off the road into a tree near the right shoulder. He was wearing his seat belt and was not ejected from the vehicle but died of his injuries almost immediately. The impact folded the car and shattered the windshield.
Palaez was a Guatemalan native who came to the United States in 1988 to live with his second wife. Palaez also had two daughters ages 3 and 7 and a 3-year-old son. He is also survived by two brothers, a sister and an aunt who live in San Mateo.
He was returning from his job as a chauffeur for the Westin Hotel in Millbrae when he crashed, according to the CHP. The Chrysler is thought to be owned by his boss. Officers are still investigating the crash but believe Palaez was driving fast and the road was wet.
Palaez' body is being shipped back to Guatemala for burial.<
