Now that a temporary restraining order forcing the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission to refrain from adding chloramine to the Hetch Hetchy water supply is being contemplated by Peninsula attorney Norman Newhouse, water customers can express their indignation about the decision to chlorimate (since Feb.2, 2004) by demanding a return to "old-fashioned" chlorine.
It only makes sense to restore chlorine as the only sane water disinfectant until an alternative one can be implemented. A variety of safe, effective alternatives already mentioned in previous articles and letters, exist. Water customers only need to select from ultraviolet light, ozone, hydrogen peroxide, reverse osmosis, and 500-degree boiling of water to find which single method or combination is cost-effective for the long term. Chloramine-medicated respiratory toxicity, the condition which has been stated as consistent with Ms. Denise Kula Johnson's adverse reaction to the water used for bathing in Menlo Park Feb. 3, 2004, (according to Dr. Robert Bocian of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation) serves notice to all of us to expel chloramine from our water. He continues: "Abundant medical literature points to chloramine as a potential respiratory-tract irritant". All asthma sufferers, such as myself, should take this to heart. Return to "old-fashioned" chlorine now.
