The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services granted citizenship to 537,131 people in the fiscal year 2004. Of those, 4,668 were members of the armed forces. That year 103,339 petitions were denied. Most recently, thousands more stated their oath to the United States and pledged their allegiance. These were people from all over the world.
Eligibility for naturalization, a process for foreign citizens or nationals to gain U.S. citizenship, includes continuous residency in the United States, the ability to read, write, and speak English, knowledge and understand of U.S. history and government, good moral character and attachment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution.
Do the 12 million undocumented illegals meet that criteria? Why do we condone and worry about their welfare? Why is our congress, to date, making a "political football," being "chicken-livered" as to what to do about the illegals? We are in this dilemma because the congress has not enforced our immigration laws. To me, the only path to take is no amnesty. Deport all undocumented illegals to their homeland and start from scratch. If and when needed, documented immigrants could be employed each year.
We U.S. citizens would save billions of tax dollars that have spent on them the last two or three decades. Deportation would cost a "pretty penny," but a minute cost to what we've already had for their illegal entry. Giving amnesty or near amnesty is not fair to the new citizens, nor to our parents, grandparent, all of whom became U.S. citizens legally. Rule of law has to be upheld and enforced, otherwise we have nothing.
