I am overwhelmed and discouraged by Michelle Durand’s opinion column, "The trouble with Tookie,” that ran Thursday, Dec. 1. I cannot believe that anyone, Ms. Durand, or any paper, the Daily Journal, would value life so little by writing and printing such an article. I realize that its intent was humorous, but its content was not.
She may think that she is making a mockery of Stanley "Tookie” Williams, but instead, she is making mockery of herself and the Daily Journal. Tookie Williams has changed from being the co-founder of the infamous Crips gang to an anti-gang and violence educator, all while behind bars.
Can the Daily Journal change to supporting human rights? It might mean not eating at restaurants with cloth napkins and instead donating that money to good causes.
