Editor,
Our city councils and our citizenry need to open their eyes about what state Sen. Scott Weiner, D-San Francisco, is doing, and who funds him (trades and real estate which will gain from SB 50 and SB 281). Thank goodness someone has the foresight to see Weiner for who he is, and for what he is, as former senator and Superior Court Judge Quentin Kopp has done (“The Cow Palace land grab that is Senate Bill 281” guest perspective in the April 30 edition of the Daily Journal).

All these great plants for The Weiner...love it. You probably don't even live here or can afford the rents. BTW, low income in SF is $117,000/year, these units are not going to be for you.
I am a renter and support Senator Wiener's vision. Our local towns are not doing nearly enough to address the quickly growing rents in the area. I don't think the state is power-tripping nor does it want to be in the position of having to tell local towns what to do. But the state has no choice but to step in and address an issue that local governments can't seem to acknowledge or fix.
Local municipalities have proven time and time again that they can't be trusted when it comes to housing production versus job growth, and it always ends up negatively affecting the most vulnerable. It's time for a regional approach. I'm incredibly grateful for Senator Wiener's continued leadership, as are so many others.
If Sacramento and Wiener want to take away control then they should be obligated to accept all the pension liabilities related to the planning process, and be required to pay for each cities planning department going forward or run their own. The problem with Sacramento is it's actions are a series of unfunded mandates.
Jerry Hill is on the Appropriations Committee and SB50 could be voted on as soon as Monday the 6th. Jerry has been silent on SB50 despite the near universal rejection of it by his constituent City Councils. He should vote against SB50 and at least call for more analysis of its costs. For those who think SB50 will help solve the housing problem. I say read the Bill you will be surprised at what type of housing will be built. Dont count on anything affordable!
Great points but Jerry is on his way out, time to cash in.
A lot of bull at the Cow Palace.
How can anyone believe we have local control now with the massive numbers of renters being displaced? Our local pols never heard of saying no to more and more commercial buildings with thousands more jobs. We are now a Company owned Bay Area and your bosses are Google, Facebook, et al.
At one time we had leaders in Sacramento, like Mr. Kopp, who guided us on a better path. Now? Senator Weiner and his like minded cohorts who promise us a dim future.
