Shavonne Lin’s Student News column, “The SAT — what it measures” in the Sept. 1 issue of the Daily Journal claimed the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) favored the rich and advantaged. Actually, the Pre-Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) taken one year before the SAT offers opportunities for students from many backgrounds to win scholarships to many very good colleges. The money is provided by organizations, and by the rich and advantaged who may have studied at that college or who have businesses in that area. The PSAT is the gateway to scholarships.
The PSAT is taken by thousands of students every year. We have over 2,000 colleges and universities in the United States trying to attract the best students they can. They use the test scores from the College Board to decide what students to offer scholarships to. Top tier colleges are known throughout and world and only accept less than five percent of their applicants. Second-tier colleges mail out letters asking top scoring students to apply, with the promise of a scholarship.
My daughter scored in the top one half of 1 percent of students taking the PSAT. She received at least a dozen letters from colleges around the country. She chose a small engineering college out of state. Her classmates were from all over the country and many had top scholarships. Later her employer paid for her to earn a master’s degree at Stanford. I think the College Board tests are an honest measure of ability and I am grateful to all who donate for college scholarships.
