As the Biotech Capital of the World, South San Francisco thrives in innovation, yet safe, affordable housing remains neglected. Despite our city’s prosperity, many residents struggle to find homes they can afford. The now-defunct Municipal Services Building offers a prime opportunity to address this disparity.
The city has committed to repurposing the MSB site for housing, and because the land is publicly owned, developing deeply affordable homes is feasible. However, some in the community oppose this plan, favoring a senior center instead. But it doesn’t have to be one or the other; combining affordable housing with a senior or community center is a win-win solution that meets diverse community needs.
The MSB site presents a unique chance to create housing and foster connections between young families and seniors, strengthening ties across generations. We strongly support the development of affordable housing and community space on this site. South San Francisco has the resources and responsibility to lead on housing affordability, and developing the MSB site is a crucial step toward a more inclusive and equitable future for all residents.
