Editor,
Business and economic development is on the ballot this election. I mean this literally and figuratively. Â
In Redwood City and Belmont, there are measures relating to business license taxes on the ballot. The outcome of these measures will greatly impact businesses in those cities. Â
This also means that knowing where local candidates stand on economic development issues is essential. What are candidates’ policy positions on business taxes, development fees, streamlining development processes, and height and density restrictions for commercial and residential developments? What are their respective approaches to partnering with the business community and creating jobs? The answers to these questions impact our ability to sustain a vibrant local economy that benefits everyone. Not all candidates want businesses to be profitable or to have conditions that allow for the building of more housing. Not all candidates have the disposition, experience or intellectual curiosity to serve our communities well in public office. Knowing these deficiencies and traits about candidates is necessary in determining who to vote for.
The continued deterioration of civility in public spaces and among elected officials is detrimental to our ability to solve complex problems. We need candidates with the temperament and ability to build consensus and focus on the common good, rather than pursue personal crusades or fight ideological wars.
Elections have consequences. One candidate can shape the trajectory of a governing body. Â
Casting our ballots for candidates who will provide a vision and the leadership for our future and model behaviors of which we can be proud is our key responsibility as voters and citizens. Â Â
We must choose wisely.

Thanks for your well written letter, Ms. Buckmaster. I’d add that another reason to cast our ballot is not only to vote in folks who will better our lives, but also to vote out folks who do not better our lives and who instead kowtow to special interests or their personal crusades. Folks, do the research and decide which candidates will better our lives and most importantly, VOTE. Voters get the government they deserve so make sure you vote and ensure your voice is heard.
