Editor,

I agree that outside influences and Sacramento big-whigs are attempting to over-ride and subvert San Mateo’s Measure Y, eliminating its reasonable requirement creating new affordable housing (“Follow the Money,” Oct. 9 letter to the editor).

While I respect Mr. Handerson's concerns, I must respectfully disagree. A 'no' vote on Measure T is actually a 'yes' vote on development in our single-family neighborhoods. Let me tell you why.

Measure T is a carefully crafted compromise that balances our community's needs with state requirements. It's not perfect - nothing ever is - but it's a pragmatic solution to a complex problem.

I've seen many changes in San Mateo over the years, and I understand the desire to preserve our city's character. However, we can't stick our heads in the sand and pretend the housing crisis doesn't exist. Setting San Mateo up for a fight with the state is not only a waste of our hard-earned taxpayer dollars, but it's also a battle we're bound to lose. Just look at other cities that tried to resist - they ended up worse off.

I've lived here long enough to know that San Mateo has always been a forward-thinking community. Let's continue that tradition by voting 'yes' on Measure T. It's not about "Los Angeles-ization" - it's about sensible planning for our city's future. Remember, folks, change is coming whether we like it or not. The question is: do we want to be at the helm, or do we want others to decide for us?

I fully agree with Doug and am against reckless overbuilding of high density HIGH RISES filled with lots of high priced luxury units overlooking the bay. How will this help create affordable housing? It won't. And that is just one reason Measure T is BAD and WRONG for San Mateo. Say NO to overbuilding of Tall buildings. NO to more Traffic. NO to more pollution. NO to underfunding our police and other essential services. Tell city hall to stop wasting taxpayer money and do the right thing and stop playing politics in a way that negatively impacts us all. Vote NO on T. Stand Up San Mateo.
