At the last San Carlos City Council meeting, in a most blatant display of utter disdain for the citizens of San Carlos, Mayor Doherty actually suggested Councilmen King and Eaton should retain their seats on the South County Fire Authority, or at least act in some advisory capacity. It made it clear where her loyalty rests, with her friends. What about her loyalty to the citizens of this city? Business as usual reigns: "friends first." And perhaps it isn't even that. Perhaps it's really a debt being repaid as the wheel on the political machine grinds away.
Doesn't the mayor know about the Collier/King fiasco and its far-reaching implications? Of course she does. Hasn't the mayor heard numerous people complain that Councilman King should step down? Of course she has. The problem is that she doesn't care what the people think. She doesn't care about the public trust. Without public trust, all decisions erode into a miasma of suspicion and anger. And the cost of that is far greater than any monetary loss.
Fortunately, an election is merely weeks away. And with a new council also comes a new mayor. Ms. Doherty's time at the reins will soon be up. And if Ms. Doherty persists in decisions that are antagonistic to the people's needs, then the hallmark of her term will not be as a community builder, a touted goal from her ascendancy to mayor which now rings hollow; instead, she'll merely be one of those whose terms have been marred by the priority of making sure her friends were taken care of first.
