It was uplifting to read Jonathan Madison’s well-written column of Aug. 8 and to hear him encouraging the community to embrace restorative justice principles. It is good to know that there are other voices out there advocating for societal change.
As a restorative justice program for women transitioning from incarceration, we see the benefit of treating our women with respect and dignity while offering the opportunity to make amends and restore relationships in the community. Whenever we have disputes in the house, we resolve them using restorative justice principles through a community process. We find this to be very effective in allowing everyone to be heard, healed and to help find community-based solutions. It is often a change for our clients to experience restorative justice rather than punishment when mistakes are made.
As a faith-based program, we strive to offer God’s unconditional love and hope to our clients and we are blessed to be able to walk alongside them as they make significant changes in their lives. We rely on a lot of volunteers, as well as donations to keep our program running. We are always open to share more about our program to anyone who wants to learn more about restorative justice. Â
