I was deeply upset to learn about the slaughterhouse in Iowa that was shocking animals in the face with electric prods, slitting their throats open while they were conscious, pulling out their tracheas while they're alive, dumping them — frightened out of their wits and struggling — onto the ground in their own blood, and then waiting for them to die, as many of them struggled, and stood up while blood was pouring from their throats, and took long minutes to die ("PETA after kosher slaughterhouses," Dec. 2).
Israel has more religious vegetarians than any other country except India, because Judaism has always taught kindness to animals. So the fact that this place, which gave promises that they had the highest standards for humane treatment, could be ripping the animals apart while they were still fully conscious-shows that you never know what you're paying for.
For all of us who think cruelty to animals is wrong, a vegetarian diet suddenly looks like the right choice.
