While I agree with Michelle Durand's attempt to draw attention to the issue of eating disorders in relation to Terri Schiavo, it is unfortunate that her description of people with these disorders depicts selfish people who are "too busy thinking about their imagined flab" ("Another tragedy to Schiavo" in the March 31 edition of Daily Journal). This couldn't be further from the truth and is a commonly held myth about those suffering from eating disorders.
In reality, eating disorders grab hold of an individual and distort the mind in relation to the body and, as such, are listed as a psychiatric disorder on the DSM IV. People can suffer for years with a variety of physical, emotional and social consequences as a result of their eating disorders, and, yes, some die from the disorder.
A combination of medication, therapy and nutritional counseling can help people suffering from this disorder, from which there can be many relapses and many attempts at both inpatient and outpatient treatment. People recover, often after an uphill battle. What would assist those suffering from eating disorders the most is less judgmental attitudes from others and more understanding of the scope and reality of this disorder.
