In his letter on July 13, Don Havis writes, "I'm going to try one last time, at least on this subject, to respond to letter writers R. M. Parkhurst and James O. Clifford Sr., both of whom had letters in the June 28 issue of the Daily Journal which were critical of my earlier expressed views." I hope so. I am frankly tired of reading letters from people who think of America first, but only when they are looking for something to blame.
As a Democrat, I can surely say that I can find plenty of faults with some of the policies of the current administration. I do not need to make up stuff. Don states that America is only there for the oil and we don't have an exit strategy because we don't plan to leave. The United States has been involved in aid to many countries that do not have oil - surely Don remembers Bosnia, Somalia, Grenada and Afghanistan to name a few recent ones. If a country that we help has oil, it does not mean that we are going to stay there - Kuwait is the most recent example. Kuwait is still a sovereign independent country not part of the United States.
The only way the terrorist insurgents can get the theocratic dictatorship they want is by discouraging and weakening us at home, making our troops think they do not have our support and that America is corrupt and dishonorable. The terrorist insurgents hurt us badly when they flew planes into the World Trade Center - just as Japan hurt us at Pearl Harbor. They hurt us again when they blew up a railcar in Spain convincing that country to withdraw its troops from Iraq. It worked so well in fact, they got four young British citizens to blow themselves up and 50 innocent civilians in London. But Hitler had bombed London many years before hoping to discourage the British people. He didn't win but he managed to cause a long drawn out war that cost many lives. The terrorist insurgents are not going to win either but if they can convince us that our country is dishonorable and something to be ashamed of, they may be able to extend this conflict into a much more costly war. Let's support our troops and bring them home as soon as possible.
