The two articles which talk about low-carb diets in your Saturday edition are missing a point: That losing weight isn't the prime reason for eating that way. Cutting way back on pasta, white rice, white bread, potatoes and sugary products helps keep one's blood sugar at consistent levels. This helps keep body energy and attention levels high, and helps prevent heavy snacking and hunger pangs between meals.
Not all carbs are verboten - low-carb eating encourages reasonable eating of fibrous veggies such as broccoli, celery and asparagus. Fibrous fruits such as apples and pears can be eaten.
There's another misconception going around (and you'll even hear nutritionists say this) - that eat so many calories over and above those that you burn off and you'll add a given amount of weight. The fact is that people have wildly different ways of processing, using and eliminating food due to genetic and body chemistry differences. We all know a friend who eats all he or she wants and gains no weight, while another eats much, much less and still gains weight at the drop of a hat.
What's important is to not starve yourself, but to eat knowledgeably and healthily, and to exercise regularly. If you're overweight, weight loss will happen as an added benefit.
