This is not a man we are speaking about ("Man charged for axing dog" in the May 4 edition of the Daily Journal). This is a cold-blooded coward who attacks an animal with a deadly weapon. It isn't uncommon for animals or even small children to become so agitated when seeing arguments that they lose their wits. They are simply reacting.
Anyone who does such a barbaric thing deserves to spend quite awhile in jail to give him time to think (if that is indeed possible).
Outbursts of violence against animals are horrible in their own right, but in addition, they are a signal that the next victim may have two legs instead of four. For the last 50 years social workers and psychologists have gathered evidence that violent crimes ignored because they are perpetrated on animals repeat themselves, and with time and trivialization by the courts, the species of victim often changes to humans. This is not said to diminish an animal's suffering and death, but simply a warning that anyone could also fall victim if that attacker is left to continue on his destructive path.
