Editor,
This country welcomed me as a legal immigrant from South Africa almost 40 years ago. About a decade later, I wanted to bring my sister here. The system took 12 long years to process and approve the application.
In the meantime, I wanted to take care of my elderly parents here. The immigration process for them would have been relatively quick, but they wanted to wait for my sister’s application to be approved first. By the time it was, they were too old to come here and be productive, which they insisted on doing.
Rather than burdening me and the United States, they remained in their country of birth during a period of volatile, frightening change. They ultimately died there, comforted only by my regular visits. I happily bore the financial burden of sustaining them there with hundreds of thousands of after-tax dollars.
When an entitled Kennedy kid who was born rich, rants about the United States being a nation of immigrants, it leaves me cold. Had my own family ignored the law as every illegal immigrant has done, I might have been better off. So it’s personally difficult for me to feel anything but contempt for people who think they have a right to be here just because they came and stayed in violation of the law, and expect to get away with it.
Bona fide refugees are another story, but there’s a word limitation on letters to the editor.
