I would like to strenuously object to the proposed scope of work for this project “SMCCCD Building 20 Demolition (SCH #2015052007), at the San Mateo County Community College District. Removing the trees, garden, landscaping and greenhouses and increasing the amount of hard scape paving directly counters the state of California and the governor’s stated climate impact goals of reducing greenhouse gases and global warming.
In addition, I have observed the parking lots during peak hours at the many existing lots and they are never near capacity. Therefore, creating more parking is simply a complete waste of capital money.
I strongly urge the board to reject this wasted capital project and instead install more landscape islands with trees in  existing parking lots in order to reduce the impact of global warming.
Visiting the east coast I'm always impressed with the large trees that canopy every street, making the streets walkable on even the hottest day. Each huge tree takes just 5 ft x 5 ft yet has a profound effect on the environment. Why can't the college replace every 5th parking spot with a tree. Isn't this the value we need to model to the next generation studying at the college?
Consider this new bike lane approach to do both...plant more trees and improve bike lane architecture
Instead off planting trees between the sidewalk and street...this has trees planted between the vehicle lane and bicycle lane. With the pedestrian sidewalk on the other side of the bike lane
