Editor,

This is not an original idea, but I have had great interactions when doing it and, in a small way, it helps me practice accepting everyone as they are. When doing your shopping at your favorite supermarket, pick out a few gift cards to keep in your wallet for the next time you come across a person in need. Instead of giving them money, give them a meal, along with respect and human interaction. It only takes one or two minutes to ask someone if they need anything, offer them a gift card, ask them their name and shake their hand. I usually have on hand gift cards for local fast-food establishments (such as Wendy’s, Taco Bell, Burger King) where a person can sit inside comfortably and enjoy a meal. I often also have cards for Safeway or Target, since basic supplies like socks are often what’s needed most.
