I wanted to publicly thank Craig Wiesner for his article “The Lens” in the Jan. 27 edition of the Daily Journal. I totally agree with his sentiment about how our experiences shape us as human beings. These experiences, both positive and challenging, create the lens by which we view the world and interact with one another.
Also shared in the same article, I love and appreciate that Craig will share that he is gay whenever the opportunity at his church arises for him to mention it. For the folks who are proudly a part of the LGBTQ+ Community (myself included), we share these precious pieces of who we are so that we can be seen, heard and hopefully more accepted. The amazing Harvey Milk was a proponent of LGBTQ+ folks coming out to everyone. From my understanding, Milk felt coming out was important because our friends, neighbors and church groups would be less likely to be hateful and ideally more caring, understanding and thoughtful if they actually knew someone who identified as LGBTQ+ in their life.
Thank you for running Craig’s column, as well as all the other regulars. Even if I don’t agree with all the columnists all the time, I am glad they are there because we all deserve to be seen and heard.
Thanks for your letter, Ms. Barrientos, but I don’t believe Mr. Milk was around when the B, T, Q, and + were added so I’d question if Mr. Milk would have been a proponent. That being said, I agree we should all be seen and heard but identity politics should not be the basis for being “more accepted.”
