Having been a political junkie since the early 1960s, I have seen and dabbled in populism of every stripe. Beginning as a Young Republican (ringing doorbells for Goldwater, in ‘64), I had done a Vietnam War backflip by ‘68, when I was a daily volunteer at Gene McCarthy’s national campaign office. By ‘76, I was a member of the Libertarian National Council, a Jesse Jackson delegate to the 1988 DNC, and a Green Party organizer for Ralph Nader, in 2000.
In other words, populism has driven my political thinking, much more so than parties or ideologies. And in all those years, I’ve never seen anyone better define populist thinking than Jon Mays’ Nov. 21 column. Keep up the good work.
