Editor,
Joe Guttenbeil’s letter criticizing the NFL’s selection of Bad Bunny for the upcoming Super Bowl halftime show misses a few key points.
First, the Super Bowl halftime performer is rarely — if ever — a “local” artist. When the game was held in Tampa, we didn’t get Tom Petty. When it was in Detroit, we didn’t get Eminem. When it was in Houston, we didn’t get Beyoncé (until years later). The show is about global entertainment appeal, not local geography.
Second, while Metallica and Carlos Santana are certainly Bay Area legends, Metallica was founded 44 years ago and hasn’t had a hit single since 2008. Santana’s last major chart success was in 2002. The NFL halftime show has evolved into a celebration of current, global pop culture — not a classic rock revue.
The only time in recent memory that local artists dominated the halftime show was in 2022, when Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar headlined in Los Angeles. Somehow, I doubt that show would have satisfied Joe’s nostalgia for the “good old days.”
Let’s be honest — Joe probably longs for those classic local halftime acts like the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Coldplay and The Who. Come on, Joe, tell us what’s really bothering you.
