Since the end of June 2023, I have frequently attempted recreational walks and small shopping trips to Safeway on Woodside Road. This always takes me past a billboard at 847 Woodside Road advertising low-income housing for families. So when I saw the article about “Affordable housing” by Ana Mata suggested for the same spot, I thought who would want to build family housing in that location.
I could just picture those families with children stepping out of their new homes right into Woodside Road traffic. This section of Woodside Road is not a place for families with children.
I live in a different section of Woodside Road in a large retirement residence closer to the intersection with El Camino. The traffic noise is tremendous. For safety reasons, hardly anybody ventures out to Woodside Road from our place unless they are in a car. Fortunately, we have a garden to walk in. It is shielded from some of the noise by the buildings that surround us. Next to our residence is a large affordable housing project. Four long banners flutter down the front, advertising housing. But even low-income residents don’t want to live there.
I am not informed about the 1900 Broadway location, but I am very familiar with the one on Woodside Road. However, behind the Historic Union Cemetery, up to Poplar and Redwood avenues, there are quite a few nice apartment buildings, with up to the fourth floor outside walkups. The area is well taken care of, many of the sidewalks have been replaced. There are gardens with flowers. This seems to be the kind of housing suitable for families with children. Whether it is affordable or not now, I don’t know.
