Editor,
The Batmobile incident is yet another example of the abuse of power of Sheriff Bolanos.
Voters saw the corruption and elected a new sheriff by a huge margin in our recent primary election. However, did you know that there is currently no mechanism to investigate or hold either the Sheriff or the DA accountable or to force them to be transparent about investigations?
In 2007, when then-Sheriff Munks and then, Undersheriff Bolanos were detained in an FBI raid on an illegal brothel in Las Vegas that was trafficking minors, I naively thought some action would be taken. It was not. With the Batmobile incident, I predict the response will again be that they “conducted an internal investigation” and took “appropriate action.”
The Batmobile incident is actually rather humorous, if you disregard the waste of taxpayer dollars. However, there is a darker side to the corruption in our county. Did you know that there have 19 use-of-force deaths in San Mateo County during District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe’s 11 years in office? And yet zero law enforcement officers in San Mateo County have been charged for any of these incidents.

Sounds like crying over spilled milk. Perhaps, Ms. West, no charges should have been brought against these officers. I’m sure the folks investigating these incidents have much more experience in these matters than you. Perhaps the folks who performed the investigations still subscribe to the innocent until proven guilty maxim. It’ll be interesting to see if you’re still as critical of the new sheriff in town or whether you’ll give her a pass.
