Like nearly everybody, I was delighted to see Jackie Speier take Tom Lantos’ seat as our congressional representative after he passed away. Her energetic pursuit of consumer protection, among other things, made me proud to have her represent us in Congress.
Now I’ve had to change my mind about Speier, D-San Mateo. I’ve written her about several matters, but neither Speier nor her staff have felt the need even to acknowledge the correspondence. She was even a no-show at her own rally at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds a few months ago and has accumulated a zero-for-four response rate with me.
In contrast, Assemblyman Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, has not grown a big head. He practices a completely different ethos in constituent relations and, in my experience, respects the people who put him in office.
It’s arrogant to ignore one’s constituents. Until recently, that’s about the last quality I would have ascribed to Jackie Speier. Unfortunately, her inaction speaks for itself, and I certainly can’t support it when she comes up for re-election next year.
