Editor, Construction of California State Highway 1 began in 1912 ("Know it all" in the April 24 edition of the Daily Journal). At the time, Highway 1 was being constructed between South San Francisco and Burlingame. A ground breaking ceremony was held on El Camino Real in San Mateo. Please reread what you wrote and tell me what is wrong with the picture you drew. If the road ran between South San Francisco and Burlingame is there a good reason why the ground breaking took place in San Mateo? Maybe they could not get their cars up this far? I may be all wet but normally a ground breaking takes place on site or within a few miles of the actual construction. We even went all the way up to the moon for that ground breaking. Actually, the ground breaking happened in San Bruno at El Camino Real and Crystal Springs Road. Years ago there was a reenactment but because we could not do it on ECR it took place in the Walgreen's parking lot. And if you ever want to believe that notorious Daly City historian, San Francisco Bay was never discovered from San Bruno mountain. It was discovered by the Spanish coming over the hill from what is now Pacifica and there is a marker up there to verify it. Besides that, I believe most of what you write. Alice Barnes San Bruno
