President Donald Trump’s “skinny budget” proposal aims to eliminate a group of eight federally funded programs known as TRIO that support higher education access and success for individuals from “disadvantaged backgrounds.”

Eliminating these programs would be a huge mistake.

No Ms. Puente - "My path to the professoriate is mainly due to federally funded TRIO programs". You should take credit for taking the initiative to further your education. I am sure TRIO helped but there are millions of Americans with similar economic, cultural or ethnic backgrounds who somehow made it without federal assistance. As a poor immigrant myself, admittedly a member of the White Supremacy class, it took military service and a self-developed motivational environment for me to eventually graduate from a top university. You chose the right friendships and you were determined to advance yourself, regardless of your background and quite possibly because of it. Race, ethnicity, and economics are not as important as character, and that is what you were able to prove.

Thanks for your letter, Ms. Puente, but are there statistics on how much is spent on TRIO vs. how many TRIO has helped? Has DOGE gone through TRIO funds to determine how much, if any, fraud, waste, and abuse is occurring? Although TRIO may be retired, are you sure TRIO doesn’t continue under another alphabet group? The Department of Education continues to administer funds. Perhaps you should also encourage folks to call or write to their state representatives to obtain funds. We all know that at least in California, we are not getting our bang for our bucks as student outcomes are only getting worse while education spending has increased. DOGE California and I’d bet you’d find plenty of funds for TRIO programs.
