It seems as though our country is again at an ideological crossroads in regard to racism, hate and intolerance.
As a towheaded California boy I spent my summers in Columbia, Missouri, north of the Mason-Dixon line living with my grandma. It was a different world and experience to say the least. My grandma used the “N” word naturally and freely in her conversations with me. I remember the first time she did this I looked at my mom horrified and she just gave me the “don’t make waves look.”
It wasn’t long after that I had to call both my mom and grandma out on the use of that word. I was a little kid who had to step up to these role models of mine. I was taught in school this language was not OK. My Grandma begrudgingly obliged and altered her vocabulary.
As I grew older and began paying attention to the local paper it became evident that this little college town had a not so nice alter ego. After blistering hot evenings, the folks on “the other side of town,” as the local paper explained, would be out late into the night opening fire hydrants and causing trouble for the police and firemen. “Those people” and “the blacks” were the trouble of the town. “Stay away from that part of town especially at night” the paper advised. As I read the paper day after day it was clear that it, along with the police department and a lot of the locals, had no qualms about placing stereotypical blame on a single racial group. This was in the mid-’80s. The paper failed to mention that the trouble never started until the police showed up or that the fire hydrants were magically shut off before the local fire department had to come out. The views of that community were truly backwards in so many ways. I’m sure this was a small sampling of what was, and still goes on in some communities throughout this country.
Although we are not born with hate, fear and misunderstanding of others, it can quickly be learned and indoctrinated into culture, our society and ourselves. The events in Charlottesville, locally in San Francisco and Berkeley, and other places around our nation are an extension of this ideological development. The groups of counter-protesters are trying to send a clear message that this way of thinking and acting will not be tolerated. And although both groups are allowed to voice their opinions, violence will sometimes dominate the narrative.

I would appeal to these counter-protesters and their respective groups to look at combining their efforts into a larger collective movement that could have the potential as a stronger and more effective sociopolitical influence. Groups like Black Lives Matter, Equality Foundation, Human Rights Campaign, Interaction, Islamic Society of America and other interested stakeholders in the future of our nation should come together to share their commonality moving forward.
By establishing an umbrella organization that focuses on collective human rights, these groups could have a much more cohesive and focused movement that would inherently bring a much larger political influence into local, regional and national arenas and elections.
This is not to say that each group should not keep their autonomy and mission, but collectively there could be potential for a much greater movement toward human rights, eventual suppression and even elimination of these hate groups that have begun to make a comeback. A political extension of these groups could ultimately create a large, influential voting bloc. This body of voters could ultimately put enough local and national representatives into office to truly begin making legislative change for all human rights.
Years later while in her 90s, my grandma could no longer take care of herself. She hired a woman from Kenya to help her. She became part of our family and my grandma loved her. I do want to believe that my grandma not only tried to understand people of a different race/color, but came to love them for who they were as people.
Sometimes things that we are vehemently against become closer than we think. We are at a crossroads and hopefully this time we can really all come together and move our nation forward so that hate, misunderstanding and intolerance of other races and cultures can someday be a thing of the past.
Tim Hilborn, born and raised in the Bay Area, lives in San Carlos. He has been teaching in the San Mateo-Foster City Elementary School District for the past 26 years.
I'm just glad I was able to grow up in San Mateo where we always had a diverse population that got along well with each other and racist attitudes were non existent.
What a paradox: Mr. Hillborn expresses his support for many groups (some of which have been violent, engaged in hateful rhetoric and even advocated violent acts against police) with a goal of placing, "misunderstanding and intolerance of other races and cultures can someday be a thing of the past." Most Americans would welcome leaving those vices in the past but that's the exact opposite of what many of these groups espouse. The Hate Industry is well-funded and determined to cause chaos with no end in sight. Sad.
Didn't you know that when whites hate, it's racism?
When blacks hate whites, it's OK and PC to do so, and when whites support the alt left, that's double bonus PC points and make the white person look great to their peers.
James, your comments are the exact illustration of what I wrote about. Your stereotypical ideals completely support everything I have tried to express. Next time you might want to use specific examples of racism and hate in regard to your conceptual "white and black" stance. Your personification of alt left whites trying to score PC points is absolutely ridiculous. There is a reason why these people are stepping up to voice their concerns. Probably an ideological concept you will never understand!
Jack, where in this article did I express my support with any group I mentioned? It was an appeal for these groups to come together so the violence would NOT dominate the narrative of what is being expressed. You need to provide specific details of what as you quote "these groups" are doing and who they are. Apparently your lack of comprehension and understanding of these issues is truly lacking!
...a crossroads...?...Don't know where to start with such a self surviving, selectively biased, cliched and out-dated claim of racism, especially when living in California...with its wide variety of ethnic, racial, national, and religious backgrounds. Hispanics are the largest ethnic group in what has been a very liberal, diverse state for many, many years now.
Unfortunately you did not read or comprehend the first sentence or for that matter the whole article. Go back and re read it. I can't speculate about your experiences with racism in other places besides California but from your comments it is obvious you have no clue as to what is happening outside of your bay area little bubble!
TH...get some sleep and please stop with the personal attacks...this is America and people are allowed to voice opinions that may differ from your particular narrative...right?
No personal attacks here. Just stating the facts no matter how much you may disagree. Absolutely, please voice your opinion even if you don't agree. Can you please clarify what you mean by: "Don't know where to start with such a self surviving, selectively biased, cliched and out-dated claim of racism, especially when living in California". This comment makes absolutely no sense. Maybe next time you should support your comments with a factual explanation before posting them.
TH, I'll respond to your request in spite of of your insults (a questionable decision on my part) to shed light on the danger of your position. BLM, an organization which claims the Michael Brown shooting was a case of criminal cop behavior even though there's no case to support that outrageous accusation, has routinely engaged in violent rhetoric such as, "pigs in a blanket, fry 'em like bacon!" a reference to how they want police officers to be treated. A BLM marcher in St. Louis yesterday said that Anthony Smith was murdered by a cop because he was black. What ignorance! "In a word, what we saw on display was hypocrisy. Black Lives Matter activists refused to live up to their own call. This particular movement is regularly guilty of that failing. At the same time that many demand that law enforcement stop forming conclusions based on skin color, many activists form conclusions based solely on the presence of a badge." - Ian Tuttle. BLM is determined to indoctrinate as many people as they can with prejudice and hate. They should be the last group that should be encouraged to become stronger. America is ill-served by the grievance industry whose primary goal is to profit financially by perpetuating division and identity politics. The "appeal" you make to the groups you cite to combine efforts into a larger, collective movement would add fuel to the fires already burning in too many American cities.
What insults? I was just stating facts in reply to your comments. I won't take the bait on this one suffice to say your whole explanation about BLM focuses on a completely stereotypical view of this movement and what it represents. "BLM is determined to indoctrinate as many people as they can with prejudice and hate. " Did that quote come from Fox news? Really, come on!
My views have been backed-up by quotes and facts. You, on the other hand, make baseless accusations. Like I said previously, it was a questionable decision to respond to you and now you have removed all doubt. But seeing that you're someone who seeks to have a cop-hating group like BLM become stronger, it's not a surprise that you continue to demonstrate a lack of character. But rest assured, sir, that the radical views you espouse will be exposed at every turn.
