There’s an old adage that one must first acknowledge a problem exists before it can be addressed. It bears repeating because of a huge disagreement over the size of California’s budget deficit.

In December, the Legislature’s independent budget analyst said the state faces a $68 billion deficit, mostly due to revenue shortfalls in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 budgets, and projections into 2024-25.

The CA budget will never be honestly balanced as long as we remain a one party state. We will end up like other deficit ridden Democrat states where the people and companies that pay most of the taxes move their tax venue out of state.

Good morning, Dan. Great question... who is right? The Legislature's analyst or our Governor? Another number that may be a factor is the number of Californians relocating to other states. How many are actually leaving and what is the impact of their departure on state tax revenues?

Great observations, Ray. There are plenty of articles about the shrinking population and folks moving out. But not so many, if at all, on the impact on state tax revenues. Or even the income range of those moving out. Maybe I’ll take a gander and do some homework to see what’s out there…
