We have a number of solar panels on our roof that already make a huge difference, and have been considering whether it is time to take the next step and install a couple of large batteries. Based on the comments and emails I received, many of my readers showed themselves to be interested in the subject and want to know more. Accordingly, this week, I’m following up on that earlier column and addressing some of the questions some readers had.

Mr. Wilson, thanks very much for part 2 and for providing ROI based on household cost data for your solar installation. It sounds like if a homeowner is planning on staying in their home for at least a decade, it might be worth their financial outlay to invest in solar panels. I am interested in what costs are associated with removal and disposal when solar panels have outlived their useful life. Do homeowners remove them and drop them off under Oakland freeways? Just kidding – please dispose of solar panels responsibly. I’m sure there are costs (likely escalating) associated with disposing panels which all contain hazardous materials? Are there companies that will take them off your hands for free so they can mine the precious metals? Thanks again, for the follow-up. Perhaps your information will convince others to do their research and take the plunge, so to speak.
