Ursula Shaun Lenihan passed peacefully and in comfort in Sunnyvale, California. She was a proud native of Seattle, Washington.
At the age of 16, Shaun won the Seattle Junior Women’s Singles Championship during her senior year at Forest Ridge of the Sacred Heart High School and earned the distinguished Outstanding Athlete award.
Shaun was a graduate of the University of Washington, Class of 1960, where she earned both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master’s degree in Social Work. She dedicated her career to serving others as a social worker, including meaningful and impactful work at the Suicide Prevention Center in Los Angeles. She later maintained a private practice as a family therapist in San Mateo County for over 40 years.
Shaun had a lifelong passion for competitive tennis as a ranked singles and doubles player. She and her doubles partner, Karla Barnette, were legendary for their undefeated 14-year record in USTA 4.5 competition. Shaun continued to play NorCal USTA doubles tournaments until the age of 80. She taught tennis to children ages 5–7 for over 20 years and officiated tennis tournaments statewide, ultimately retiring from umpiring at age 84.
She remained an engaged and generous member of her community, volunteering at the SPCA and the Hillbarn Theatre in Foster City, California.
Shaun was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett G. Lenihan and Ursula Farringer Lenihan, and her brothers, Emmett G. Lenihan II and William F. Lenihan. She is survived by her loving family, including her daughter, Kelly Derbin (Russ McHugh); her son, James Derbin (Neera Monica Lal); and her beloved granddaughters, Cora and Lydia Derbin.
Shaun’s kindness, keen sense of humor, and enthusiasm for life will be forever cherished in our hearts.
The Funeral will be held on December 17, 2025 at 11 a.m. at Saint Simon Catholic Parish, 1860 Grant Rd, Los Altos, CA 94024.
