Elis Nielsen, resident of San Mateo, died Dec. 29, 2015, surrounded by her family. In Denmark in 1936, she was born to Alfred and Marie Højgaard.
In 1958, Elis married Niels B. Nielsen. After the birth of daughter Dorthy, they immigrated to the United States in December 1959. A year later, daughter Lisbeth was born.
Elis’ faith in Jesus Christ was evident in all she did, including active membership at Hope Lutheran Church, San Mateo. “Always ready to be a good friend to all.”
A talented dressmaker, Elis also created beautiful wedding dresses. Her handwork in bobbin lace-making, sewing and other crafts were learned as a child in Denmark. She also volunteered through the Lace Museum and Guild, helped at voting polls and was a Girl Scout leader.
Survivors include husband Niels; daughters the Rev. Dorthy Nielsen (John Dallum), Silverton Oregon, and Lisbeth Nielsen, Seattle, Washington; siblings Erling Højgaard, Margit Hansen, Minna Due Jensen and Thomas Højgaard; grandchildren the Rev. Karen Thistlethwaite, Siena and Colin Thistlethwaite, and Jenna Wells; and many family and friends.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Jan. 9 at Hope Lutheran Church, San Mateo.
