MONTEREY — Monterey County is reporting the discovery of a vineyard pest that has led to a grape quarantine in much of Northern California’s wine country.
Agriculture officials confirmed that a European grapevine moth was trapped on May 10 in a vineyard near Soledad. About 400 traps were placed in within 80 square miles of the find to determine if there is a greater infestation. Additional moths could trigger a quarantine.
The grape shipments were restricted across hundreds of square miles since the first moths were discovered in Napa in September of 2009. In spite of precautions it has since been reported in Sonoma, Solano, Mendocino, Merced and Fresno counties.
The moth’s larva feeds on grape flowers and developing fruit. Subsequent generations eat mature grapes, predisposing the crop to fungal infections.
