A Peninsula man charged with murder for the death of his passenger in a wrong-way freeway chase last year will have surgery today for a leg injury sustained in the accident.
Joseph Boldt, 22, of Pacifica, is charged with second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony evading, for his role in the March 16, 2003, crash that killed Bobby Luke Kleinheinz, 20, of La Honda.
At the time of the crash on Interstate 280 at Alpine Road, Boldt was allegedly high on crystal methamphetamine and alcohol, and both he and Kleinheinz had outstanding arrest warrants for drug charges, the District Attorney's Office said.
The fatal chase began about 1:30 a.m. when Boldt allegedly ran a stop sign at 40 mph and then took off from Millbrae police Sgt. Mark Farber, a 10-year officer, who tried to pull him over, according to the police.
Boldt got onto the highway at Millbrae Avenue and began driving southbound at up to 110 mph in the northbound lanes, according to the District Atorney's Office.

About 15 minutes later, following an 18-mile pursuit, Boldt's vehicle allegedly rammed a car on the highway just south of Menlo Park. Kleinheinz crashed through the windshield onto the pavement and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the car suffered from broken wrists and was treated and released at Stanford Medical Center.
Boldt, who was arrested after spending three weeks recuperating at Stanford, has suffered ongoing leg trouble since the crash and most recently suffered an infection, Prosecutor Sean Gallagher said. Boldt remains in the hospital and is scheduled for a bone-grafting procedure Tuesday, Gallagher said.
Boldt is scheduled to begin trial on March 14, 2005.
