Wintery weather returned Friday as temperatures plunged below 60 degrees and close to an inch of rain pelted the Peninsula. For skiers, this news may be tempered by the thought that the stormy weather brought with it an estimated foot of snow in some parts of the Sierra-Nevadas.
In the Bay Area, however, what has been an unseasonably warm March so far will return to normal in the coming week with a rain-filled forecast and a six-day high of only 64 degrees.
No storm warnings have yet been put into effect though local agencies say they have braced themselves for potential problems.
"We've been watching the weather over the last week, and we'll have plenty of people on call over the weekend just in case," said Pacific Gas and Electric spokesman Paul Moreno.
He noted that as of Friday, no power outages were reported — surprising even on a day without wet weather.
Moreno said most weather-related power outages are caused by wind and trees.
"The rain itself is not so bad unless it rains for many days and the soil gets saturated, causing roots to loosen and trees to topple over," he said.
Moreno advised that people unplug appliances and phone PG&E in the event of a power outage. An appliance such as a clothes iron, if left plugged in during an outage, could come back to life unnoticed when power comes back on and cause problems.
