A surfer who was briefly stranded in the waters off the San Francisco coast Sunday was helped back to shore by two fellow wave riders before rescuers arrived at the scene, according to authorities.
The San Francisco Fire Department, along with the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Park Police, responded to Ocean Beach near the intersection of the Great Highway and Noriega Street at about 10:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a female surfer in distress.
"We went down and put together our search and rescue package,'' said Fire Department spokesman Pete Howes. "We were told after our search was under way that surfers had assisted a young woman at Lincoln (Way) and Great Highway.''
"We made sure that we continued searching until we were able to verify that,'' he said.
Howes said he was told by a member of the rescue team that waters were difficult to navigate today because the current was running from south-north near the shore and from north-south farther out.
No injuries were reported among the surfers and rescuers.
