The highest elevations in San Mateo County saw snow Monday night after the region was hit with an unusually cold storm that also triggered mudslides and road closures.
Snow fell just about everywhere above 1,000 feet Monday, including in parts of the Santa Cruz Mountains, with temperatures as low as 32 degrees around that area, according to the National Weather Service.
The conditions prompted a warning by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office that also mentioned the potential for black ice on upper Skyline Boulevard between state routes 92 and 84.
That area saw about 6.5 inches of rain since Friday while San Francisco International Airport logged about 1.2 inches of rain, bringing season totals to 90 percent of normal.
A sinkhole forced the California Highway Patrol to close Skyline Boulevard south of Alpine Road to the Santa Clara County line. The sinkhole was most of the width of a lane and about 20 feet, CHP spokesman Art Montiel said. Old La Honda Road about a mile west of Skyline is also still closed, Montiel said.
Page Mill Road in Palo Alto reopened Tuesday afternoon after it was closed between Foothills Park Gate No. 1 and Skyline Boulevard due to snow and ice covering the road, according to Palo Alto Police. And
Highway 17 was closed briefly Monday night as Caltrans crews plowed snow off the roads.
