The San Mateo man accused of shooting his estranged wife's boyfriend in the leg earlier this year was sentenced to six years in prison yesterday after admitting assault with a deadly weapon and burglary.

The plea bargain by Bryan Nick, 47, sidestepped a trial on two counts of attempted murder and handed the man a much shorter sentence than the life in prison term he potentially faced. Nick originally pleaded not guilty to the Jan. 13 incident but changed his mind last month. On Sept. 3, he pleaded no contest to two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, using a firearm and one count of residential burglary. In return, attorneys agreed Nick would receive a six-year term.
