SAN FRANCISCO -- Part of a terminal at San Francisco International Airport was evacuated for more than an hour Thursday after a woman passed through a closed security gate.
The woman was detained later Thursday in Baltimore, where she had flown from San Francisco, according to federal officials. Airport spokesman Mike McCarron said a United Airlines boarding area was evacuated at about 1 p.m. and planes in the area were emptied of passengers.
Half of Terminal 3 was closed for about one hour, and about 2,000 people were rescreened. No flights were canceled, but many were delayed.
About 10 to 15 minutes lapsed between when the woman moved a table out of her way to pass through the gate and when security personnel realized it.
The Transportation Security Administration said officials at Baltimore's airport detained the woman Thursday night after checking passengers on the 10 flights that left San Francisco during that time.
The FBI was questioning her and the U.S. Attorney's office would decide whether to file charges, according to a TSA spokesman, who said he did not know her identity. The FBI in Baltimore would not comment.
Federal security director Ed Gomez said the breach likely wouldn't result in any changes in policy or barricades. TSA spokesman Nico Melendez said it was odd that someone would move a table to get through a security gate.<
