State Sen. Josh Becker on Monday urged California health officials to expand vaccine eligibility in San Mateo County’s vulnerable communities ahead of April 15.

In a news release, Becker, D-San Mateo, requested that the state allow vaccinations for all residents 16 and older in communities like East Palo Alto and North Fair Oaks, which have had higher infection rates and lower vaccination rates compared to the rest of San Mateo County. The goal is to make it as easy as possible for people to get vaccinated, Becker said.

I find these sensible ideas suggested by State Senator Becker positions that must be considered. There are many living in the shadow economy who we SM Residents rely upon as discussed in this article. Housekeepers, constructions workers, gardeners and others are all working very hard to support homeowners, businesses, and our local society. The challenge that I hope Senator Becker will get to work on, if we can rally the community around his idea, is how to reach these people, who may not all be legal immigrants, and who stay in the shadows out of fear. One can only imagine the distrust seeded over the last years of immigrant bashing affecting the willingness of those most in need of the vaccine having what they feel is safe access to those jabs. Kudos to Senator Becker for his efforts to step forward on this essential safety issue.
