A 28-year-old Burlingame man, already in custody for a probation violation, was rebooked last week after a search warrant at his residence yielded a stolen firearm and an illegal assault rifle -- a machine gun.
Alan Ayala, a known gang member, was rebooked on the additional charges of possession of a machine gun, possession of an assault weapon, possession of a short-barreled rifle, felon in possession of ammunition, felon in possession of a firearm, and receiving stolen property.
During the last several months, the San Mateo Police Department meticulously gathered evidence and learned that Ayala was committing the crime of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Investigators learned Ayala had one residence in Burlingame and another in San Mateo.
Officers obtained search warrants for both residences.
On Wednesday, with the assistance of outside law enforcement agencies, San Mateo police executed search warrants in the 800 block of Rolison Road in Burlingame and the 1000 block of Folkstone Avenue in San Mateo.
During the search of the Folkstone Avenue location, officers collected a short barreled AR rifle with a “swift link” conversion device, which coverts it to a machine gun, a loaded .45 caliber Sig Sauer 1911 handgun with seven rounds of ammunition, an AR-15 rifle, a loaded 60 round .556 magazine, a loaded 30 round .556 magazine, and a multiple items of gang paraphernalia. Later, San Mateo police learned the Sig Sauer was a reported stolen firearm. A cellphone was located and collected as evidence at the Rolison location.
