A six-month temporary funding agreement for the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office will mean deputies working over nine hours of overtime will receive double pay, according to the office of Supervisor Ray Mueller, who launched the effort.
Mueller reached out to County Executive Mike Callagy and San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus after hearing of the stressors associated with the critical staffing shortage amongst sheriff’s deputies both in the field and during recent hearings before the board, according to his office.
As officer retention and officer recruitment struggle nationwide, in San Mateo County deputies have been forced into working long periods of mandatory overtime, according to his office.
On Dec. 12, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to pass a six-month temporary funding agreement.
“Most of my district is served by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s office and it’s important to ensure our deputies are recognized for their dedication and sense of duty to maintain staffing levels in the communities they serve,” Mueller said in a press release. “While help is on the way, as new hire and lateral candidates are currently moving through the hiring process, ensuring public safety is maintained is a first priority. This investment is a message to our Sheriff’s deputies that our community values them and honors their personal sacrifice, as they work long hours away from their families, to protect the community.”
“I’m grateful to Supervisor Mueller, the Board of Supervisors, and the County for being sensitive to the issues surrounding our staffing crisis and recognizing the dedication and duty our deputies and corrections officers exhibit as they sacrifice their time to keep our communities safe,” Sheriff Christina Corpus said in the release.

Well, it’s obvious that San Mateo County has plenty of money and with the $multi-million being spent on an oversight committee and paying folks to make mountains out of molehills, this is the least SMC can do. Actually, this six-month temporary funding agreement should be made permanent, or at least as long as the civilian oversight committee is in effect.
Great decision...hopefully staffing levels will continue to rise moving forward.
